The Ambassador Bridge at Rush Hour: A Commuter's Guide to the Border Crossing

The Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor is one of North America's busiest international crossings, carrying commuters, shoppers and a heavy share of the continent's auto trade. With a second crossing, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, nearing completion downstream, here is how the current bridge actually flows.

The Ambassador Bridge at Rush Hour: A Commuter's Guide to the Border Crossing (Detroit Motor City News)

The Ambassador Bridge has carried traffic between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario since 1929, and it still does two jobs at once: a commuter route for the binational workforce of the auto industry, and a freight artery for the trucks that supply factories on both sides of the Detroit River. That double duty is why its rush hours behave like no other bridge's — the morning peak mixes cars heading to shifts with truck queues that answer to factory schedules, not office ones.

The practical rules have not changed in years. Cross with your documents ready — a passport, enhanced driver's license or trusted-traveler card — and expect the inspection booths, run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection on this side and the Canada Border Services Agency on the other, to set the pace. NEXUS lanes reward commuters who enroll, and truck traffic uses its own approach lanes, which is why a car driver should never follow the truck queue onto the plaza by mistake.

Downstream, the publicly owned Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit's Delray neighborhood and Windsor is in its final construction phase, with six lanes, dedicated walking and cycling paths, and new port-of-entry plazas on both sides. When it opens, the region will for the first time have two full crossings — and the Ambassador will have a competitor it has never had. Until then, one privately owned bridge, plus the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel downtown for cars and buses, carries the whole river's road traffic.

Detroit Motor City News will track crossing wait times and bridge and tunnel advisories as part of our daily traffic coverage, with special attention to plant shift changes, game nights and holiday shopping weekends, when the border and downtown peak at the same time. Check conditions before you commit to a crossing — on this river, ten minutes of checking beats an hour in line.
